Local, state and federal law enforcement and safety agencies will join residents of The Woodlands to celebrate National Night Out during the community-wide kick-off celebration at Northshore Park this Saturday, October 1 from 1 – 5 pm.

This free event is coordinated by The Woodlands Township, Neighborhood Services Department, and will include many safety and crime fighting demonstrations by local organizations. The National Night Out community-wide kick-off is planned as a great event for families, with free food, a bounce house, music, face painting, games and more. Guests will include Puffy Pine Cone, McGruff the Crime Dog, Smokey Bear and Carey Bear from Memorial Hermann Hospital. Free parking will be available at Aon Hewitt Associates, just a short walk to Northshore Park under Lake Woodlands Bridge.

The official date of Neighborhood National Night Out in Texas is Tuesday, October 4. On that date, residents are encouraged to gather between 5:30 and 8:00 pm on their street or in a nearby park. How a neighborhood celebrates is up to the people who live there; the purpose is to bring neighbors together to help fight crime. At the neighborhood event, residents will have the opportunity to create a thank you poster (paper will be provided) for our deputies and fire fighters. Neighbors will also have an opportunity to collect food and clothing to benefit Interfaith. Collection bags will be supplied by Kroger.

Help The Woodlands compete for recognition from the National Association of Town Watch by sending photos of your neighborhood National Night Out party on Tuesday, October 4. One Grand Prize Winner and one First Prize Winner will be chosen from each village.

The Wildflower festival is super awesome! It is like Arbor Day in terms of fun! The petting zoo is usually Marsha's Petting Zoo, which is my favorite portable petting zoo. Try to go at a non peak time, like when they open or before they close.

The Woodlands Wildflower Festival to Bloom October 15 at Rob Fleming Park

The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC) and The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau have stepped up as presenting sponsors for The Woodlands Wildflower Festival, an annual tradition set for Saturday, October 15 from 10 am until 2 pm at Rob Fleming Park in the Village of Creekside Park, according to Susan Vreeland-Wendt, Director of Marketing for TWDC.  The Brickman Group, Ltd., a professional landscape service company with a branch office in The Woodlands, is the participating sponsor.

Residents will be able to collect 12 varieties of free wildflower seeds, distributed by local businesses in The Woodlands, while enjoying displays of native plants, environmental exhibits and booths with nature-related gift items for sale.  Children will enjoy free giant inflatable rides, a free petting zoo, pony rides, face painting and balloon artists. Lovable mascot of The Woodlands, Puffy Pine Cone, will pose for free photographs with children from 11 am until 12 noon.

The official Wildflower Festival poster and tee-shirt, selected from the annual Wildflower Festival contest, will be on sale at the booth of The Woodlands Lions Club. Proceeds from the event benefit Lions Club charities.  The Lions Club provides services for the blind and visually impaired, and assists youth and senior citizen programs.

HEB Deals: T bone steak under $10/lb

There are quite a few deals at HEB this week, especially at the new location in the back of The Woodlands. The Wednesday Chronicle has the weekly ads, but you can also find them at the front of the store. HEB does a pretty good job of displaying the deals around the store. The one that caught my attention the most was the Prime T-bone steaks for under $10/lb. Here is the wikipedia entry on T bone steaks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-bone_steak . The T-bone is a combination of a strip steak and the tenderloin. Here is the wikipedia entry on filet mignon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filet_mignon Considering the cost of filet mignon by itself, this really is a deal. You can always request, which steak you think is best and if you don't see one in the display, you can ask them to cut you some more. We have found that a lof the steaks that we get at HEB hold up well to freezing. I would expect each steak to be in the 1lb range so think of this as inexpensive in home dinner compared to going out for the same thing. That is assuming you don't mind grilling.

Community Information - Buy or sell at the The Woodlands Fall Flea Market

The Woodlands Fall Flea Market will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011, from 7 to 10 a.m., in the Town Center Parking Garage. The garage is located at the southwest corner of Six Pines Drive and Lake Robbins, adjacent to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Tickets are available at The Woodlands Township Service Center, 2201 Lake Woodlands Drive, directly across the street from The Woodlands United Methodist Church, Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The flea market is a cooperative event with all The Woodlands' villages participating. The fees for sellers are $50 per booth space, $100 for a vehicle and trailer. There is no fee for buyers. Any proceeds over cost are funneled back into the community in the form of scholarships, grants and other village association projects.

The Woodlands covenants and deed restrictions do not permit garage sales on residential properties. The flea market provides a means for The Woodlands residents to sell unwanted household goods. Bargain hunters who buy pre-owned items keep them out of the landfill and lessen their impact on the environment. Buying "recycled" products also preserves the natural resources that are used in the manufacturing of these items.

HEB Market Street: Scavenger Hunt on Sept 18 1-4pm.

Every participant receives a prize. Pick up the list when you arrive. I saw this on the same flyer as the story time at the buddy bucks machine and customer service. 

HEB Story Time: Sunday Sept 11 1-4pm every half an hour

It will be in the front of the market street store in the covering with chairs. They are reading a Bearnstein bears book about too much junk food. I don't think I would make a special trip for it, but if you are planning on doing shopping there any ways it sounds like something to stop by. They said they will give each kid in attendance a free prize. I saw the flyer at the buddy bucks machine and at customer service. 

HEB Market Street Fall Festival Saturday, Sept 24 10am - 2pm

They had a flyer about this at the customer service center (We went there because we were instant winners at the HEB Buddy bucks machine today! Woohoo, Free pencil eraser!). They will have a lot of vendor booths and the usual free things that you find at festivals. 

HEB Book Deals Update

We went to HEB today for our weekly shop. I saw some of the books that were for free around the store. They had displays next to the products. I found a bunch at the back of the meat section. If you don't go for the buy something get the book free deal, you can get the books for $0.59 each, which is a deal in itself. We resisted since the books didn't look so special. I couldn't find the mr. brown book next to the mootopia, but I asked about it. They said that one is going for $6 and then you get the $3 Mootopia for free.

Yay, this deal continues. We like the take out from PF Changs. They have great customer service and yummy food. You can find deals on their menu if you look. I suggest getting some of their veggies to help stretch some of the entrees for cheap.
