Positive West Nile Virus Pool in The Woodlands

The Texas Department of State Health Services has reported the first positive pool of West Nile MOSQUITOES (+WNv) within The Woodlands for 2013.  The sample was collected during surveillance the week of September 14.  Previous to that week over 600 traps had been set in the community which had not tested positive for the virus.

Response protocol by Montgomery County Precinct 3 includes street spraying in the area of the positive test site.

Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites.  Stay indoors from dusk to dawn when disease-carrying mosquitoes are active.  If you must be out, wear long, loose, light-colored clothing.  Use repellent.  Apply according to label instructions.

Avoid over-watering, control run-off from irrigation systems and eliminate sources of standing water.  Check water meter boxes, French drains and plant pots.  Maintain pools and change pet water and bird baths twice a week.  Use mosquito dunks to treat sources of water that cannot be drained.
