If you can't go opening weekend, but can commit to what day by Sept 23, you can get adult tickets for $18.
If you stop by HEB or any other ticket outlet on your way to Ren Fest instead of purchasing tickets at the gate, you save $5/adult ticket. I wonder if there is a service fee or if it is included in the price. I did this a couple of years ago. It only took a couple of minutes and was completely worth the savings for our group!
Be sure to look in your junk mail and local magazines and newspapers for free child admission coupons. They had a ton everywhere last year.
Also, go their website and check out what the themes are for the weekends so that you can plan ahead on what theme you would enjoy most.
If you worry about some of the mature behavior that can be found at Ren Fest consider going on a School Day instead.

Tip: My favorite part of Ren Fest for kid activities is Sherwood Forest. Look at the map to find it. It is in the map. That is where they have the petting zoo (watch where you step), elephant and camel rides, giant maze, and other kid friendly things to do. Also, I suggest watching the birds of prey show.
